von Papen in 1936

Franz von Papen was a German politician who served as Chancellor (1932 - 1944) before becoming the 5th President of Germany in 1944. He remained in office under the so-called Presidential Government set up by Heinrich Bruning in 1930. In 1935 he was one of the founders of the Christian Democratic Union - although never actually leading the party - and became the longest serving German chancellor since Bismark.
