The United Kingdom of Great Britain, France and Northern Ireland, commonly known as the United Kingdom (UK), or the Franco-British Union, is a sovereign state located in primarily in Europe with territory consisting of the British Isles, Metropolitan France and several overseas regions and territories. The United Kingdom shares land borders with the Republic of Ireland, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Germany and the Netherlands. With an estimated population of over 144 million inhabitants as of 2016, the United Kingdom is the second most populous country in Europe, behind the Soviet Union. The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy under a parliamentary system of governance with a dual capital: London and Paris, the former being the royal capital and administrative centre while the latter is the seat of national legislature and seat of national judiciary.
