Francesco Cossiga (26 July 1928 - 17 August 2010) was an Italian politician who served as the last President of Sardinia from 1975-1978 and as the fourth Prime Minister of Italy, from 1991 until 1995. As leader of the conservative National Alliance from 1985 until 1995, he was the first Prime Minister from the right to win an election and a majority of the Italian Parliament. A controversial figure both before and after his Premiership, he retired into relative obscurity after his loss in the 1995 general election to a Social Democrat-Green coalition minority government led by Alessandro Tenaglia.
