The Nexus: Index > The Badge System

The badge system on this wiki needs fixing. I have made, in the past week, 5 edits to 1983: Doomsday 4 different pages and still it does not show up on my list of earned badges. Why?

It only counts one edit/page. --Lordganon 13:15, October 18, 2010 (UTC)

The badge system is flawed. So far I've discovered:

  • All contributors not in the top 20 of the achievements leaderboard are stuck on #21.
  • I've made various edits to different Doomsday pages, yet I do not receive any of the badges.
  • I've contributed to the Wikia for two weeks straight, but don't get the badge.

The last one is especially annoying, as it indicates random days. When the badge became available to me (a few weeks ago) the counter indicated that I had contributed 7 out of the 14 days. Yesterday I had contributed 5 out of the 14 days, and today I am back at day 1. I agree that someone should look into the badge system. --XterrorX 13:44, October 18, 2010 (UTC)

You did not get a Doomsday badge because it only counts edits made to Category:1983: Doomsday. The problem is not every article is marked with that category because it is only used for primary/fundamental articles. Sorry guys, that is a flaw but what can you do. The badges only allow you to choose one category. Mitro 20:53, October 18, 2010 (UTC)
We should add some badges for making edits in other categories, such as North American Countries, European Countries, etc. That way people who contribute to the timeline are rewarded. And yeah, the time tracking seems to be off. I got myself up to like 40 days, then it reset to 1 the next day, THAT angered me.Oerwinde 16:26, October 20, 2010 (UTC)

This badge problem needs sorting out

The badge system (and how far one is towards the next set of badges) should be available in #both# remaining formats.

The 'contribute every day for X days' badges encourage 'looking for minor corrections and tweaks to make' rather than 'proper developments'.

And - looking at the Achievements board, the 'most recent badge' for the top 20 is 'Welcome to the Wiki.' Jackiespeel 17:08, November 17, 2010 (UTC)

Now the leaderboard is showing 'recently earned badges' but not the top 20 (at least in the sidebar format). The system does not seem to be working. Jackiespeel 00:07, November 21, 2010 (UTC)

  1. Is# there a list of achievements anywhere so people can decide which they will go for? Most are more accessible than the awards - especially for those who are intermittent contributors/or are willing to play 'hunt the typo and inelegance' and similar activities. Achievements Board suggestion[]

Perhaps it should be divided into two - "1000 points and above" and "next 20" (or, depending upon the break-down of points "750 (or other suitable division) 999 points". Jackiespeel 22:02, January 8, 2011 (UTC)

I'd also like a page that shows all of the badges we're progressing towards, not just the top few.Oerwinde 22:55, January 8, 2011 (UTC)

See my comment immediately above the division.

The awards system does have its advantages - but may lead to 'hunt the minor tweaks to get the XXX edits award' rather than 'create new pages.'

Having a list of badges, and contributors' particular positions for each would be useful - as would an associated discussion of how the system could develop - eg 'timelines started' (being of more than one sentence/paragraph, and edited on more than one occasion).

As Machiavelli would have said, had he written a wiki-orientated version of The Prince - better not to have introduced the points system than to have it and then make it unusable to the people whom it is meant to encourage. Jackiespeel 21:50, January 9, 2011 (UTC)

Given that all the persons on the Achievements Leaderboard have over 1 000 points, there needs to be more aimed at those in lower bands - those of us who are intermittent users etc. Jackiespeel 22:26, January 16, 2011 (UTC)

Wikia created the badge system to reward active users, not intermittent users and personally I think it is a good policy. People shouldn't be rewarded just for doing the bare minimum. You want badges Jack, you are going to need to be a more active editor. There really is no point in demanding new ways to get recognition for doing little or nothing. Mitro 17:15, January 18, 2011 (UTC)

'Intermittent' can have a number of meanings - sometimes the basics of a timeline have to be developed, or one is 'doing things outside the Wikiaverse.'

The problem is - there is no way of finding what badges one is 'collecting points towards', and there is a case for 'quality rather than quantity.' Jackiespeel 17:30, January 18, 2011 (UTC)

Intermittent to me means making only a few edits every month, which no matter how you describe means the same thing: you are not an active editor. And if one is "doing things outside the Wikiaverse" than why the hell should Wikia give you a badge for that? They want you to be on Wikia, not other websites.
You are wrong about the second point. Every editor who has enabled badges can see there progress in earning certain badges. Mitro 17:45, January 18, 2011 (UTC)

The point is - I, and others (from various comments) cannot see our current scores, and there should be some region of the achievements list which shows how those of us in the middle regions of activity* are progressing.

  • Some people are residents of the Wiki(a)verse, others intermittently so (for whatever reasons) and some merely pass through, exploring the further reaches of Wiki(a)dom.

Is there a list of badges available anywhere in Wikia? Some of the badges are accessible to those who are occasional-to-intermittent participants (and Althistory is one of the areas which require more creativity than others).

Jackiespeel 22:19, January 30, 2011 (UTC)

Jackie I never met anyone who gave such a damn about recognition on this wiki than you. I am going to be honest with you, it is really annoying and makes me want to shut down the badge system. Listen I already said there was a place you could see your "progress" and if you are using the New Wikia format than all you have to do is go to your user page. Also using the * symbol creates a bullet point if put in front of text, so using it as a footnote does not make sense. Mitro 16:24, January 31, 2011 (UTC)

Like others I prefer the sidebar format - and there should be access from there; why shouldn't there be a list of badges etc; and we all have our 'particular minor annoyances.' And - if one wants notability in the Wiki(a)verse 'helping a presently minor wiki develop' would be more practical than collecting points on AH Wiki. Jackiespeel 17:25, January 31, 2011 (UTC)

No Badges[]

I'm sure I had about 5 badges about a month ago, but now theyre gone. Does anyone have any idea what happened? Monkeymad (talk) 15:38, September 17, 2012 (UTC)

Says you have 190 badge points - should mean 5 or more badges. You still have them. If you can't see them, something may be off with your settings, or it could be just a random occurrence. Happens sometimes with Wikia. Lordganon (talk) 18:02, September 18, 2012 (UTC)
