World War III
The ports of Miami and Fort Lauderdale were used as docks for the U.S. Navy and other allied naval ships in their operations in the Atlantic and the Caribbean. When Cuba entered the war, the U.S. Navy increased its presence in Miami Metropolitan area, including that of Fort Lauderdale. The city also received an influx of Caribbean islanders escaping their occupied countries, namely from the Bahamas, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic.
