The Formosan War was a war fought between Japan, Korea, and China. From 1871 to 1874, the three nations fought over control of the island of Formosa. Then owned by the Chinese, the Koreans made vast attempts to regain the island after losing it early in the 19th century. Japan stepped in to prevent either power from taking it over, with the intent of creating a new client republic. Korea emerged as the victor of the war after Japan withdrew in 1873 and forced its northern border up to Manchuria.
