The Republic of Florida is an independent nation on the southern tip of the eastern coast of North America. Formerly a Spanish possession, Florida became independent in 1805 and has prospered economically. It has a large tourist industry. Florida is a democratic republic, though it has a history of violent upheaval. A series of coups, the latest in 1976, have damaged the country's economy and reputation but in the past thirty years the government has remained stable and democratic. Florida is a member of the United American Provinces.
