An alternate design for the UK flag

The Union Flag, sometimes also referred to as the Union Jack, is the current flag of the United Kingdom. It does have some status in other countries, such as Canada, where it is referred to as the Royal Union Flag, and has a

status in many British Overseas Realms. It also appears in the canton of many former British colonies, including Australia and New Zealand.

The first Union flag was created in 1606, when James VI of Scotland also inherited the crown of the England, creating a personal union. This flag included the flags of the Kingdoms of England and Scotland. Later, when Ireland joined the Union, the diagonal cross was added. However, in 2014, Scotland voted to leave the union, prompting different calls for a new flag. While many people were in favour of removing Scottish Elements of the flag, many others viewed the flag as integeral to British identity, many soliders having fought and died under it. As such, the old Union Flag is used in conjuction with the new design.

With the change in the UK flag, it was proposed that the flags of the British Overseas Territories be changed. Despite this, they were kept.
