The First Compact of Philadelphi is an international compact that governs the usage of the Philadelphi Canal, a canal that connects the Red Sea to the Mediterranean.

The canal creates a shortcut to the Indian Ocean and takes roughly 4 days to traverse. The Canal is opened 1470 and became fully operational for medium-large ships in 1475.

This compact regulated use of the Philadelphi Canal from the 1460s to the 1620s, and was replaced by the Second Compact of Philadelphi after the creation of Aegypt out of Egypt and Alexandria.

Basics of Compact

For all countries to use and have full access to the canal:

  • Alexandria will provide protection of cargo in Aiguptia and Alexandria.
  • Alexandria will govern the commerce of the region. Merchants will pay between a 1% and 5% tariff based on the value of the goods being transported. NB: this amount is subject to change
  • All Nations agree to protect the Kingdom of Alexandria and Aiguptia from attack. (thus all nations must aid Alexandria and Aiguptia if Alexandria or Aiguptia are attacked)
  • Use of the canal depends on maintaining good and friendly relations with Alexandria and Aiguptia
  • Each individual nation is subject to their own agreement as part of the Compact as well in addition to the basic portion of the compact as said below.
  • Other signatories recognize the nations who sign this pact rights to use the canal.
  • In order to use the canal for military purposes the using nation must receive direct permission for each conflict from Alexandria.

Ammedment of 1481:

  • Alexandria and Aiguptia will hold the right in perpetuity to restrict trade goods from nations that are not on good terms with Alexandria from entering the nation or canal.

Agreements by Nation

Yemen

In addition to the Basic portion of the Compact of Philadelphi:

  • Yemen cedes the land between OTL Wadi Harim to OTL Wadi Mawza to Alexandria, the border with Yemen will be approximately 10 miles off the coast.
  • Yemen cedes OTL Brimin Isle to Alexandria.
    • These lands will primarily be used to keep the Red Sea safe from Pirating and looting of ships. Yemen and Alexandria will work to keep pirates out of the Red Sea.
  • Yemen recognizes Alexandrian interests on the coastal land on the other side of the staight.
  • Yemen have the exclusive rights among Islamic nations to use the canal for trade purposes for a full ten years after the full opening of the canal (expected to open in 1470 for limited traffic, and fully open in 1475).
  • Alexandria and Yemen will enjoy constant trade between the two nations.
