The Language[]

Article in Turkish

Language is pretty monolingual in Turan, with a few exceptions. The official language is Turkish. However, the Sultan, in an effort to become more European, made laws stating that Turkish adjectives and adverbs have been replaced by Italian and French aderctives and adverbs. And in an effort to become more Arab, most nouns have been replace with nouns of Arabic origin. Also, some Arabic grammar has been borrowed. The spelling has been standardised.

For example:

The difference between Turanese Turkish and OTL Turkish.
OTL Turkish Bir gece, hocaya dishinide dokuz aqce vermishler. بیر گیچه خواجایه دوشینده طوقوز اقچه ویرمیشلر.
ATL Turkish bir lile, bhocaya hulumde dokuz aqce vermishler. بیر لیله بخوجایا هولومده دوقوز اقچه وهرمیشلر

Restrictions on language have been very tight. People in possession of a document in Armenian or Greek are oftem shot. Even the use of Turkish is regulated at very high levels. Words not found in the dictionary or approved by the government can not be printed. Over one-half of prisoners in jail result from linguistic rebellion. Routing out Greek, however, has not been easy. Armenian, was an easy shot.

clothing, although there isn't direct enforcement, people are usually under social pressure, considered un-masculine), bra (" "), hats with feathers, veils (banned as a part of Selim II's reforms), head scarves (" "), any European/American hat, shorts for females, skirts for males.

Men wear, usually, a small turban, a brownish over coat , a loose light-coloured shirt, and loose pants. Often a rough cotton belt.

Women wear, traditionally, wear a really big shirt, and ankle skirt of whichever colour. This may also be replace with a dress.

However, due to Sultan Selim II's reforms, women, more often, wear very short skirts and shirts that do not cover the stomach. However, most women have a combination of both traditional and flashy.

Another aspect of Selim II reforms states that nudity is allowed around a body of water (rivers, lakes, seas, gulf, etc.)

The veil, despite almost unanimous disagreement, was banned. Such an action has caused many citizens in Turan to believe that Turan indeed is un-Islamic.

Religion[]

Most Turks follow Islam. But a relatively large portion (8%) follow Christianity. However, at the age of becoming an adult, a Christian is automatically a slave, and mass raiders, very often, kidnap Christians and sell them as slaves. Over one-half of Christians are estimated to be slaves in Turan.

Slavery[]

It is said that Turan could not run without slavery. Slavery is not viewed as an abnormal thing, or a violation to any human right, and is viewed as just an every day part of life. Actually, slaves make up 15 percent of the population. For example, the Harem is completely made up of slaves. Slaves, however come in two categories. White and African Slaves.

Slaves

The white slave population is composed of

Christian Turks/Greeks, and Caucasians, and sometimes Syrians. A majority of them are, however, Turkish. Usually, the Harem is composed of white slaves. White Slaves,

for the most part, do domestic duty. Although, position varies from male to female. A male has more of a chance of working on the field, while a woman has more of a chance of being a concubine.

Black Slave often however worked in the field. It estimated that 20% of the slave population was composed of black slaves. The census, however, fails to recognize slaves, and they are left unaccounted for. Most families in Turan have a slave. However, it is also said that the size of a family is around eight people. Sometimes, the husband can have up to five concubines.

Government[]

Turan has no branches of government. Military officials often are high up on the political chain. Suleyman is the king, and Turan follows him as the absolute monarch.

Suleyman[]

Suleyman is charismatic, young, ambitious and knowledge-thirsty. He is however, very modern. And, he listens to the Harem on

every decision he makes. Some hate him for that, and wish to start a new government. As of 1951 he is 21 years old. He holds the position of Sultan of truth, a purely ceremonial title.

His full title is:

His Imperial Majesty The Sultan Süleyman I,

Sovereign of the Imperial House of Mustershadi, Sultan of Sultans, Khan of Khans, Commander of the Faithful and Successor of the Prophet of the Lord of the Universe.

The Harem[]

Harremroom

The Harem Room

The Harem is a body of around 50 women who are concubines to the Sultan. However, if one is special enough, she might rise to be a wife. However, the Harem usually has significant political influence, and the Sultan

many times confirms laws with his favourites. Many laws, even, have been made to appease the Harem. Some laws, for example, were made to give women a more equal playing field. For example, women could enter the congress. Women could serve as commanders in the military (but not soldiers!). It is said that Selim II's reforms were inspired by his favourite.

Minister of the Rule of God[]

The minister of God was a position created by Selim II. In an attempt to stop revolting, he appointed the Minister of the Rule of God. This acts like a OTL prime minister. However, due to some laws made by Suleyman, every 14/15 Ministers of the Rule God must be a woman. The Minister of the Rule of God has the power to make laws, issue a "fatwah" (religious law), deport any man or woman over the age of adulthood, become the Sultan if the Royal Blood runs out, mobilize the army, serve as a jury, serve as a judge, power to coin money, his/her name pronounced in mosques, and appoint ministers to the House of Thoughts.

The minister of the rule of God serves 20 years (often times stays in longer), unless the Sulta dies, in which case his/her term is cut off, and then replace by the choice of the new Sultan. It has occurred once, that a member of the Harem became the Minister of the Rule of God after converting to Islam. However, she was then freed.

Grand Vizier

One of the Grand Viziers

The Grand Vizier[]

The Grand Vizier of Turan acts like another OTL prime minister. However, the Grand Vizier has to be male, and usually has no religious influence over the people. However, the Grand Vizier is elected by the House of Thoughts every five years, and may serve for up to 20 years. Despite the façade of a democracy, the Grand Vizier is often a member of the Mustershadi family, and there is plenty of Gerrymandering. Unlike the Minister of the Rule of God, the Grand Vizier's term may continue after the Sultan dies, however, this is often not the case. The Grand Vizier has the power to issue laws and appoint ministers.

The Sultan[]

The requirements for being a Sultan are:

  • Must be a Muslim
  • Must be over ten years of age
  • Must be younger than 60 years of age
  • Male descendants come before female
  • Oldest member of the Mustershadi family
  • If there is no one fit for the job, the Minister of the Rule of God become Sultan, in which case, his/her family only comes to power if there is absolutely no-one left of royal blood.

For example, if one was 7 at the time, and had children, his/her children would be the legitimate heirs, not the MRG.

House of Thoughts[]

The government form that gives Turan a legitimate façade of a democracy. Each member is considered a "minister". One may only join if the following requirements are true:

  • Speaks Turkish, and Turkish Only.
  • Considers him/herself Turkish
  • His/her mother considers herself Turkish
  • Pays One lira to join, yearly
  • Pays for his own transportation
  • Is able to meet twice a year
  • Born in Turan
  • Must wear a Fez when House of Thoughts in session

The House of Thoughts is mostly symbolic, and the Sultan little time pays heed to their decisions.
