Territorial division of South African prior to 1894
The Treaty of London was a territorial division agreement between the British Empire and the Kingdom of the Netherlands signed in 1894. Prior to 1894 the territories of South Bechuanaland and Graaff-Uitenhage were jointly controlled by Britain and the Netherlands due to competing claims in the area. To settle sovereignty issues, a joint commission determined that South Bechuanaland, due to heavy settlement by Dutch and Boer settlers, would be ceded to the Dutch Cape Colony, while Graaff-Uitenhage, having been heavily settled by British colonists, would be ceded to the British South Africa Colony.
