Beginnings of the Republican Era[]
The Point of Divergence in this TL is Election Night, 1904; Teddy Roosevelt does not promise not to run again in 1908.
Teddy Roosevelt was able to maintain significant economic stability, and greatly improved and resolved issues domestically. He then decided to run again in 1912 with no successor he was fully confidant in. He won reelection with 65% of the popular vote, and during his fourth term, he oversaw the beginnings of war in Europe. He assisted his allies in Europe, mainly Great Britain, but eventually came to the conclusion that the United States needed to intervene. In 1915, he asked for a declaration of war from Congress. He got it the next day, and the United States entered the fray. Thus began World War I. By 1916 he saw that he would not be finished by the end of his term, so he sought (and easily received) reelection.
The Republicans maintained a firm hold of Congress throughout TR's presidency, with even more substancial margins than they'd had during the Civil War.
Robert Taft in WW2 was able to negotiate a treaty with the Germans when a young man named Claus Von Stauffenberg assassinated Hitler in 1940. He led a small group of freedom-fighters in Operation Valkyrire, when they overthrew the Nazi government and returned the power to the German people.
