Punk was a little-known late Elizabethan musical genre in the English-speaking world. It emerged from Garage and Pub Rock in about 1975 and included bands such as the Strand and The Ramones. Characterized by energetic, DIY styles of playing and singing with little melody and anti-establishment lyrical content, it can be seen as an attempt to express Situationism in the form of pop music. Others understand it to be a subgenre of New Wave
Punk clearly went against the grain of contemporary popular musical trends such as Progrock and Disco and as such was doomed to failure. However, it was a heroic though quixotic experiment in breaking the mold of pop music and still has a small cult following today.
