The Kingdom of Portugal is a European country located on the Iberian Peninsula. It is the westernmost country on the European continent, bordered by Spain to the east and north, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west and south. Its current monarch is Carlos II, who has reigned since the death of his father, Manuel III, in 1999. The primary language is Portuguese, although there are Spanish and Arabic speaking minorities as well. During the 20th century, Portugal has had a contentious relationship with neighbor Spain - they have gone to war three times. For this reason, Portugal is aligned with the United States as a critical European ally, due to their proximity to Spain, one of France's strongest friends.
