The Northern Pennsylvanian Armed Guard of the Commonwealth, or simply the North Penn Armed Forces is the name of the military forces of the Commonwealth of Northern Pennsylvania. All of the branches are tasked with protecting the Commonwealth of North Pennsylvania and all of its interests and to free the oppressed as best as they can.

History[]

The Call to Order[]

On Doomsday much of the National Guard in northwest Pennsylvania was crippled. The remaining units not destroyed in the Erie blasts sat at approximately 500. With the 1984 ratification of the Community Conventional Government, the National Guard units were to be placed under the direct control over the mayor of their armory or bases location.

The Community Convention, however was not a step in the right direction. It was a tyrannical rule of city leaders Northern Pennsylvania starved to death, under their leadership. By 1989, the people, and the National Guard had enough. The immediate disposal of the Community Convention was planned by 300 National Guardsmen plus nearly a thousand civilians who had disguised their meetings in the form of reporting civil unrest in the countryside, where the National Guardsmen would meet to plan on how to take out the Community Convention. On October 3rd, 1989, the plan was enacted, and the National Guardsmen stormed the houses of all of the city officials in fireteams and killed all of them, effectively obliterating the tyrannical rule of the Community Convention Government. The National Guard and the rebels declared a Commonwealth of North Pennsylvania, originally based out of Warren, where a new constitution was drawn up and ratified.

The coup d'etat ended in 1990, but most federal officials excluding the Governor were elected from the ranks of the National Guard by the National Guard until 2000, when the National Guard optionally stepped down from government control, seeing it had "set Pennsylvania in the right direction".

Military Creation and Saguenay War[]

The birth of Pennsylvania's Army occurred in 2000, when the National Guard was split into the Armed Forces and the Regional Guard. Even though they had inherited half of the over-experienced veterans from the chaotic 80s, most of the new recruits sat under-trained and poorly equipped until the 2006 Mission, Road to Ohio. Even than, it was more of a mild offensive than a war and only 34 soldiers were killed and less than 20 were wounded.

It would not be until years later, in the Saguenay War, when North Penn's military would become active. After increased raids on Pennsylvanian New York, the Defense Cabinet secretly began looking at the war as a source of political recognition, as well as a revenge strike against the Lawrence Raiders. Without the governor's declaration of war, the Governor of Defense Defense Cabinet of North Pennsylvania contacted Canadian officials that they would be deploying the North Pennsylvanian 4th Battalion to attempt to blockade Superior forces from reaching the Northern Front which proved a vital deterrent to slowing down Superior's reinforcements and thus freeing up the Northern Front for Canada.

By the end of the war, North Pennsylvania had lost more than a fifth of their troops, which was a shocking number despite the victories at Battle of Rivière-du-Loup and the Counter-Offensive. This proved to North Pennsylvania that there was more to having an army than what they thought it was. Nevertheless North Pennsylvania was thanked for their involvement in the war along with the Mercenariness Force of Niagara.

Army[]

The North Pennsylvania Army is the largest branch of the armed forces and is responsible for ground warfare, deploying five combined arms regiments and one support regiment. The North Pennsylvanian Army is one of the largest in the region with only the Superiorian and Virginian armies being larger.

Originally, the army was primarily composed of light infantry with modified utility vehicles and a handful of police vehicles to provide support. After the Saguenay War, North Pennsylvania signed agreements with Canada to rapidly modernize its armed forces. Presently, the Army operates artillery and armored units with some of the most modern tanks in former Pennsylvania, operating ex-Canadian Leopard Main Battle Tanks.

Infantry[]

The Infantry Corps composes the majority of the North Pennsylvania Army. Infantry are responsible for engaging enemy military units in concerted effort with field artillery and armored units. North Pennsylvania deploys two regiments of light infantry and one mechanized infantry battalion. The primary weapon of the Army infantry is the C7 assault rifle with officers carrying the M1911 pistol as the primary sidearm. Other weapons deployed in support include the M60 general purpose machine gun, M2 heavy machine gun, C3 sniper rifle, and the Remington 870 shotgun. The FN C1 battle rifle serve in specific roles as designated marksman and heavy support rifles.

Each combined arms infantry regiment contains

Field Artillery[]

Field Artillery serves the role of targeting, disrupting, and destroying the enemy with coordinated fire from artillery units. North Pennsylvania operates one artillery battalion with three self propelled artillery batteries and five towed artillery batteries. The primary towed artillery gun used by the Army is the M101 light field howitzer, with the M109 self propelled howitzer serving in a limited role for maneuvering indirect fire support.

Armor[]

North Pennsylvania operates one armored battalion with two tank companies and three infantry fight vehicle companies. Tanks were procured from Canada as the country replaced the Leopard C1 main battle tank, of which North Pennsylvania purchased thirty alongside two Leopard C1 Taurus armored recovery vehicles. Additional armored vehicles from London, Ontario were purchased from between 2011 and 2014. North Pennsylvania purchased fourteen AVGP Grizzly armored personnel carriers, two AVGP Husky armored recovery vehicles, and eighteen M113 Armored Personnel Carriers.

Engineering[]

The Engineering Corps is responsible for military construction, engineering, and civil works. It may construct defensive or fighting positions, destroying enemy explosives, and route clearance. Soldiers are also lightly armed for defensive purposes but are not intended to engage in front line combat.

Finance[]

The Finance Corps is a supporting unit that is responsible for payroll and resource management.

Military Police[]

The Military Police Corps is the uniformed law enforcement branch of the Army. While it is part of the Army, it is responsible for law enforcement in all branches of the Armed Forces. In combat zones, it is responsible for convoy escort, route reconnaissance, and site security.

Ordinance[]

Ordinance is responsible for supplying ammunition and weapons to army combat units. It also maintains and procures existing and new weapons and munition.

Quartermaster and Transportation[]

The Quartermaster and Transportation Corps is responsible for moving personnel and equipment over road and rail, combat support, and coordinating deployment or movement of personnel and equipment with the Air Force and the Coast Guard.

Signal[]

The Signal Corps is a support unit which manages communications for command and control of the combat units. It involves the coordination of weather forecast, intelligence, and and advanced reconnaissance.

Coast Guard[]

The North Pennsylvania Coast Guard is the naval branch of the armed forces and responsible for maritime security, surveillance, and law enforcement in Lake Erie off the coast of North Pennsylvania. The Coast Guard also maintains some ability to engage in naval warfare, however this is limited and the fleet is outclassed by the Canadian Navy. All of North Pennsylvania’s cutter vessels originated in Canada or the Celtic Alliance. Smaller costal and inshore patrol boats are produced at the local shipyards in Ashtabula, Ohio County.

Coastal Patrol[]

The North Pennsylvania Coast Guard operates eight inshore patrol vessels, which are lightly armed with a single autocannon and two machine guns. It serves the role of defending North Pennsylvania’s ports of Ashtabula and Fairport in Ohio and Dunkirk in New York.

Offshore Patrol[]

The Coast Guard operates four cutters and one icebreaker. All five vessels were decommissioned by the Canadian Navy and Coast Guard before being procured and refit by North Pennsylvania. The vessels are responsible for anti-piracy operations on the Great Lakes, primarily Lake Erie, as well as protection of shipping convoys. Additionally, North Pennsylvania has limited capabilities to deploy or resupply special forces units via helicopter from two oft the vessels.

The Iroquois-class Destroyer are the backbone of the coast guard, being heavily armed with a 57 mm naval gun, a 29 cell vertical launch system equipped with anti-aircraft missiles, a CIWIS, and six .50 caliber heavy machine guns. Canada removed the torpedo tubes before transferring the vessel as the North Pennsylvanian Coast Guard did not require them. While it retained the vertical launch cells, logistical issues have limited their use, though virtually all aerial threats are capable of being handled by the CIWIS. The destroyers are able to carry a pair of either CH124 Sea Kings or CH-135 Twin Huey helicopters.

The Cape Roger-class Patrol Boat are light armed with two .50 caliber heavy machine guns.

One Pierre Radisson-class Ice Breaker is also employed, both to keep shipping lanes in Lake Erie open year round, but also to provide North Pennsylvania with patrol capabilities during the deep freeze months. While initially unarmed, when purchased, North Pennsylvania had the vessel refit to carry a 57 mm naval gun, a CIWIS, and four .50 caliber heavy machine guns. This involved strengthening the hull and ship frame, which occurred in the Celtic Alliance. The vessel is capable of carrying a light helicopter, however North Pennsylvania’s Air Force lacks these aircraft.

Search and Rescue[]

The Coast Guard deploys three search and rescue boats, one from Ashtabula, Ohio County; one in Dunkirk, New York County; and one in Lake City, Erie County. The search and rescue units coordinate with the Air Force to find and rescue boaters during accidents.

Air Force[]

The North Pennsylvania Air Force is the aerial branch of the armed guard. It is responsible for air patrol and defense, monitoring of the airspace, cargo transportation, and search and rescue. While the Air Force lacks fighter or multirole aircraft for air interdiction and combat missions, it possesses assets capable of engaging hostile watercraft or ground units. Additionally, it operates air defense weapons and radar stations to monitor North Pennsylvanian airspace.

Military Airlift Command[]

The Military Airlift Command acts to transport equipment, personnel, and supplies into a combat theatre as well as deploying paratroop units. Military airlift manages the CC-129 Dakota transport aircraft and CH-135 Twin Huey utility helicopters.

Tactical Air Command[]

The Tactical Air Command provides direct combat support to ground formations and manages the air defense of North Pennsylvania. Tactical Air Command operates CP-121 Tracker maritime patrol aircraft and CH-124 Sea King helicopters, which while converted from anti-submarine warfare duties to search and rescue maintain hardware to deploy torpedos and carry two M60 general purpose machine guns.

Air Training Command[]

Air Training Command is responsible for basic, technical, and flight training of new personnel or retraining and refresher training for seasoned airmen. The command operates the Cessna 172 Skyhawk as a basic trainer, Beechcraft Baron as a multi-engine trainer, and can requisition CH-135 Twin Huey’s as helicopter trainers.

Special Operations[]

North Pennsylvania operates a combined arms special forces organization unifying air, ground, and naval assets under a single organization. Special operations personnel numbers are classified, however unofficially the unit has approximately 300 to 500 personnel. The unit is trained for covert operations, counterinsurgency, reconnaissance, and unconventional warfare.

State Guard[]

The North Pennsylvania State Guard is the ground reserve force and domestic apparatus of the armed forces. It is responsible for internal disaster relief, security, and supporting the Army in wartime. The State Guard is divided by county and serves in a similar role to the World War II and Korean War era State Guard. The entire guard is comparable to the role of light infantry with only a handful of heavy weapons systems, and it is not equipped for foreign deployment.

While the guard is a recognized branch of the Armed Forces the number of personnel varies from month to month. However, it has approximately 3,000 members on a regular basis. During the Saguenay War this swelled to around 5,000 members.

Personnel Stationing[]

About 95% of North Pennsylvania's military is currently stationed in North Pennsylvania. The highest concentration of North Pennsylvania's armed forces outside of North Pennsylvania is in Toledo or Norfolk-Haldimand, with approximately 500 troops in those countries, with the rest either outside North Penn maritime boundaries or elsewhere.
