This is a political Alternate History, and only focuses on political aspects.

In 2005 the former United States of America and Canada were falling apart leading to the New American Revolution which forever shaped the history of the world.

2005[]

After the 2004 presidential election American president George Bush deregulated and cut taxes on the richest by over 20%, leading to a failing economy and protests to the policies. The average unemployment was 20.3%, the highest being in California at 38.9% which led to the state seceding from the union first after huge protests and over 2000 deaths. The California Unemployment Protests, eventually caught on in other states such as New York, Florida and the region of New England.

Eventually in Canada, with unemployment steadily rising there to about 14.9%, many protests also broke out for several reasons. The first organized protest broke out in Vancouver where unemployment rose to 20.8% and the Vancouver Radicals took over the city but troops were sent in and killed six of the revolutionaries leading to nationwide protests afterward. In Nunavut a group of First Nations people led by now First Minister Abedabun Istu rose up and created the Polar Alliance a group which wanted to create a independent nation for the northern people of Alaska, Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Greenland.

Afterwards Stephen Harper and George Bush sat down to deal with the massive protests around the continent. In the end they decided ending the Union in both countries would be best in the North American Treaty which set out different laws and thing the new countries would have to abide by.

First, it outlined that each country had to protect basic human rights and free speech ideas found in most constitutions. Second, it recognized and forced the new countries to enforce some regulation and social laws to protect its citizens. Third, the Treaty stated that each country could host its own military but not declare war on one another. Fourth, it enacted the American Union a parliamentary body based off the European Union, which had minor economic, social and war power but served as a forum for trade and peace. All nations signed the treaty and joined the AU.

Finally the new country lines were drawn in the treaty (as shown above). The Polar Republic was formed a goal of the Polar Alliance, though many questioned the economic power and if Greenland would join. Through talks Greenland joined, and became apart of the country. Due to the language and cultural difference Quebec was allowed to form its own country, and the Atlantic islands of Canada were allowed to form Acadia. The region of New England was allowed too form a country as well.

The former states of the mid-Atlantic formed Huron which in the treaty also included the southern part of Ontario while the northern part and mid-west states formed Libertas. The southern states, most of which were in the confederacy, formed Dixie while Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Oklahoma formed Texas. The more agrarian and rural state formed West America while the western provinces formed West Canada

Parts of Northern California joined a nation of Oregon, Washington and British Columbia to form Pacifica, The remaining other states formed California.

2007[]

In early 2007 the islands of Hawaii didn't want to join any nation or the American Union, after months of negotiations the new country agreed settle the issue at a later date. The territories of the two nation's were let go to form their own respective nations like Puerto Rico, Guam, Pacific Islands, and the Virgin Islands.

In the later part of 2007 the AU, created the Freedom of Continent Act which was passed by the AU Parliament, barely, which gave the option to countries to do the following. The first was to join a joint currency shared by other countries, called the American Dollar and the second was a treaty to allow certified citizens of other AU countries to travel freely and securely across other AU countries. The first part of the Act was signed by five of the countries, Quebec, Huron, Acadia, Polar Republic and Pacifica. The second was signed by all countries except Dixie and Texas. To oversee financial situations, regulate commerce, and print the American Dollar, and centralize banking the American Union Bank was also set up in the act.

2008-2010[]

Though most of the global economy was in shambles most AU countries did not feel much of the hardships felt by most countries. Some political scientists have said that since the former countries went through a sudden depression and had regulated their economy already, the continent stayed strong. In the November of 2008, the AU set up a fund in the American Union Bank to lend to other countries to deal with there spending obligations, the incident is known as the AUB Foreign Fund were the AU created a five million dollar fund to lend to other countries. About 4.8 million was sent to the United Kingdom, with 10% interest due 2020, the deal was officially signed by Gordon Brown and AU President Barack Obama, the other 0.2 million was sent to Ireland with 15% interest due 2016.

The incident raised Contiscepticism which, like EU Euroscepticism, is a policy more frequent in Conservative parties that calls for the reduction of powers in the AU.
