The United States presidential election of 2012 was a contest between Democratic Party national ticket of President Hillary Clinton from New York and Vice President Barack Obama from Illinois and the Republican Party national ticket of Senator Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania for President and Representative Ron Paul of Texas for Vice President.
Clinton benefited from a lowered unemployment rate running up to the election and the handling of foreign policy and Hurricane Sandy. On November 7, 2012, President Clinton went on to win re-election with a moderate margin in the popular vote and electoral college.
