The Holy Roman Empire (German: Heiliges Römisches Reich, Italian: Sacro Romano Impero, Latin: Imperium Romanum Sacrum) was a loose alliance of countries which existed in Central Europe between 926 until the early 1800s. The alliance once incorporated the majority of the Germanic and Italic states Europe. Today, Austria and Prussia are regarded as the two major successor states to the HRE, with Denmark and the Netherlands gaining spheres of influence after the collapse.
