World War One was a global conflict that began when Archduke Francis Ferdinand was murdered by a Serbian nationalist in the Bosnian city of Sarajevo, leading to declaration of war against Serbia by Austria-Hungary. Within months, most of the powers of Europe had joined one of two alliances: the German-led Central Powers or the British, French, and Russian-led Entente Powers. The war induced catastrophic changes, such as the overthrow of the Romanov dynasty in Russia and rise of fascist and communist movements in many parts of the globe.

Above is a map of Europe right before the war in 1914.
