Republican Party[]

Senator Ted Cruz of Texas was the frontrunner for most of the race for the nomination. Cruz dominated the primaries, early driving from the field Senators John Boozman of Arkansas, Ben Sasse of Nebraska, Tim Scott of South Carolina, and John Thune of North Dakota, and several other candidates. Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky posed the strongest challenge to Cruz with his primary wins in more libertarian states such as Vermont and his home state of Kentucky, but it was not enough to turn the tide. Cruz won the nomination on Round 1 of the 2016 Republican National Convention in his home city of Houston, Texas, in July, then chose Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, briefly one of his rivals, as his running mate.

Endorsements[]

Many of Cruz's rivals for the nomination, such as Rand Paul, John Boozman, Ben Sasse, Chuck McKristol, Tim Scott, Steve King, Carly Fiorina, and others, quickly endorsed him after dropping out, with most of them having only won their home states.

Democratic Party[]
