Known by many names, The American Civil War, The War of Unification, The Ten Years War, and the Great War, the conflict that unfolded from April 1861 to April 1871 was conflict on a scale not seen before, taking place all over earth, the battles were characterized by heavy casualties, new technology, and outright savagery.

Fighting in North America 1861-1863[]

The war began with the beginning of the american civil war in april, 1861. For two years the Union(forces loyal to the government) and the confederacy(states in rebellion to the union) fought a bloody civil war in virginia and tennessee. However a decisive confederate victory at Antietam, Maryland, well into Northern Territory, convinced the world the South could win.

Soon, two countries in europe who had long supported the confederacy entered. Declaring their recognition of the south, Britain and France entered the conflict. A union declaration of war and invasion of Canada occurred on the same day as the British and French intervention. Canada, unprepared for an actual war, with only 20,000 regulars, was crushed within weeks. Ottawa and other cities fell to the Union early on.

The attacks forced the British to divert a huge amount of their fleet from Europe to North America. However the US seizing of cities and forts left the British with few bases for this fleet. The Union's ironclad fleet attacked the British as they sailed trying to look for a port.

The Battle of Greenland was a naval battle that occured on February 2nd, 1863. A union battlefleet, led by Monitors, attacked the british. A clash of the ironclads followed. The Union's monitors obliterating the British wooden based fleet.

In North America, the Union launched an invasion of Mexico, which at this time was occupied by the french. Greeted as liberators by the people, they captured Mexico City in Early May. These victories were largely due to the fact that a large, experienced, and motivated Union force faced a large, but relatively inexperienced Anglo-French force.

War In Europe begins, 1863[]

America was not alone fighting the British and French. Russia and Prussia joined the war in the side of the Union.
