The Kings and Queens of Anglia are normally dated from Sweyn I's rule, even though Anglia did not become independent from Wessex until the defeat of Edmund II Ironside by Cnut I a few years later.

William II spends the last years of his reign preparing the way for his sole heir, his sister Anna of Norfolk, to pass the throne on to a as yet unborn son. However at his death, she still does not have a son. Flemish lords argue that she is unable to inherit, or pass on, Anglia's continental properties due to Salian law. This unleashes the War of Anglian Succession as her cousins Eric IX of Denmark and Sigismund I of Luxembourg fight for the crown. Through mutual consent she acts as regent for the Danish claimants in Anglia itself.
