A list of all the South African States in Corrupted Sunshine, circa 1987, in order of population.

States[]

In 1874, the first attempt to ''federate'' South Africa's Kingdoms, Tribal Areas, and Boer Republics, was done by Sir Henry Bartle Frere, when he was sent to South Africa as the High Commissioner for the British Empire, and was heavily opposed by the South African Republic and the Kingdom of Zululand; which resulted in the start of the Zulu Wars in 1879.

Later, In 1910, the Union of South Africa was successfully established when the British unified the Cape, Natal, Transvaal and Orange River Colonies (although, the latter two were, before the 2nd Boer War, independent nations known as the South African Republic and the Orange Free State) into one, confederated nation, similar to that of Canada.

These 4 colonies became South Africa's original provinces, and remained so until 1961 when the Federal Republic of South Africa was established after a Republic was established after a referendum was held in 1960 debating on whether South Africa should leave the Commonwealth or remain part of it. South West Africa became the Northwest State in 1961, but was granted de-facto independence in 1965 as the Republic of Damaritzland.

In late 1961, the Provinces were turned into States, of which there are currently 4 of; however from 1963 to 1981, the three Bantustans of Bophuthatswana, Ciskei, and Venda, were granted seats in the United Nations although never granted full independence from South Africa.
