A play on the flag of Trenton. The bicolour of blue and gold may represent West Jersey's historic connections to Pennsylvania (particularly in the flag of Philadelphia). The three sheaves (or garbs) may also be used to represent the state's historic connections with Pennsylvania, but more so represent the state's Quaker origins, as well as being regarded as the third state of New Netherland.
