The Russian Federation (Russian: Российская Федерация, Rossiyskaya Federatsiya), colloquially known as Russia (Россия, Rossiya), and abbreviated as the RF (РФ); is a sovereign state which spans across northern Eurasia. The nation is bordered by: (clockwise from north) Korea, Manchuria, Mongolia, Uyghuristan, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Ukraine, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, and Norway; as well as having maritime borders with Alaska, Japan, and Crimea. Moscow is both the capital and largest city.

History[]

The modern-day Russian Federation was established on December 26, 1991 (following the dissolution of the Soviet Union). A constitutional crisis took place in 1993 between President Boris Yeltsin and the Supreme Soviet (the national legislature). Disagreements over the direction of the nation would end with Yeltsin unconstitutionally abolishing the legislature. In response, the people's deputies impeach Yeltin, with Vice President Aleksandr Rutskoy becoming acting president. With backing from the military, Yeltsin is forcibly removed from power on October 4th.

The people's deputies would gradually reorganize Russia into a parliamentary republic during the 1990s. The first elections held after the coup would see Viktor Anpilov and the communists winning in the Supreme Soviet. Many of the economic policies of Boris Yeltsin were reversed. In 1995, imperial tricolor is replaced with a modified Soviet flag (which was also done to end the ambiguity with the flags of Alaska and Eritrea). Due to uncertainties over the internal structure of the nation, some of the federal subjects of Russia pushed to elevate their status into republics (which had more autonomy). This movement would accelerate following the coup, leading to the nation becoming a federation of republics.

In 2000, Belarus is willingly annexed into the Russian Federation. Despite the new land and people, the Russian economy was still lagging compared to Europe and North America. In a backlash to the communists, a coalition of liberal and Atlanticist parties would see success. The coalition, led by Boris Nemtsov, wins the Supreme Soviet in 2003, followed a year later with the election of Grigory Yavlinsky to the presidency. The Nemtsov government would take a more reconciliatory foreign policy and would see the continued privatization of the Russian economy.
