The Republic of Dagestan is a country located in the northern portions of the Caucasus. Prior to Doomsday, it was a republic subject to the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. It gained its independence soon after Doomsday.
Dagestan has great ethnic diversity, with several dozen ethnic groups and subgroups, most of which speak either Caucasian, Turkic, or Iranian languages. Largest among these ethnic groups are the Avar, Dargin, Kumyk, and Lezgin. While Russians form only a small proportion of the population, Russian remains the primary official language due to its widespread usage and its ability to allow easy communication between the various ethnic groups.

Doomsday[]
The capital city of Dagestan, the city of Makhachkala, along with the air base near the city of Kitslyar, were both nuked on Doomsday. Refugees were sent fleeing throughout the republic, the majority of which fled southwards. The government officals who survived the attack fled southwards, to the city of Derbent, which became the provisional capital of the republic.
In the months that followed, no news from Moscow, or really, any other cities in the Soviet Union, arrived in Derbent. This led many to believe that the USSR had managed to collapse completely. A nationalist movement began to emerge as a result; the lack of news from outside brought joy to many, who began to believe that the communist government that had long oppressed them and their religion was now gone, though this angered the officials from the capital.
Post-Doomsday[]
The southern portions of Dagestan received little damage from the events of Doomsday, having been protected by distance and the mountains. Areas north from there received some fallout, and are today in the process of being put back under government control.
In 1985, things finally came to a head, and the communist officials were overthrown by nationalists. Independence was promptly declared on July 11th, 1985.
However, due to the multi-ethnic makeup of the area, the republic itself is rather prone to in-fighting of some degree, though a power-sharing agreement signed when the republic was established has done much to mitigate the trouble. The new elite of the republic, largely consisting of Avars, Dargins, and the small Russian population, has done much to keep this intact.
A small, but violent radical Islamic underground has started to make trouble in the area; it is believed that they are supported by the Iranian government, though no accusations have been made at this time by the government. In the late 1990s the government even had to fight off a couple of invasion attempts by radical forces, which caused destruction in the western portions of the country and hindered rebuilding elsewhere.
Overall, however, Islam has proven to be a unifier in the region, as for the majority of ethnic groups, it is the only real thing that they have in common.
In the summer of 2010, however, with intelligence showing that more radicals would attempt to invade from Chechnya, the government found its military resources to be taxed. In response, they hired members of the PRMDS organization to help them fight it off. They managed to do so, and have remained on government payroll since.
Culture[]
The people of Dagestan include a large variety of ethnic groups. According to recent census work, Northeast Caucasians, which includes the Avars, Dargins and Lezgins, make up about 60% of the population of Dagestan. Turkic peoples, like the Kumyks, Nogais and Azeris, make up around 30%, and Russians the remaining 10% . Other ethnic groups each account for less than 0.5% of the total population, and are largely irrelevant.

Foreign Relations[]
Dagestan is not a member of the League of Nations because of Siberian interference, though they did recently re-apply. It is widely believed that it will be turned down.
Ardent republicans, the Dagistanis hold contempt for monarchists, which has hurt their relations with several countries. And, despite the name of their republic, they also hold immense dislike for extremists, even Islamic ones.
Government and Politics[]
The government of the Islamic Republic is based on the old Soviet government. Executive functions are held by the Council of State, and other functions are held by the Council of Ministers.

Dagestan holds a fairly small military for its size.
