Welcome to Night of the Living Alternate History, a map game about teamwork, Zombies, warfare and leading your makeshift country to controlling the remnants of the old world. Please read all rules and guidelines before joining the game.

On October 1, 1968, George A. Romero released the film, Night of the Living Dead. Today it is viewed as the beginning of Zombies on the big screen, but what if that’s not all it inspired? In this map game we explore what would happen if a group of scientists decided to recreate some of the effects detailed in this movie...

Even if it means the death of thousands  millions of people.

Please read the Pre-Apocalypse Timeline for information on some nations and events leading up to the start of the game.

If you are new to the game please visit the portal page, where you can find a tutorial and other information.

It is never too late to join.

Map Creation Rules[]

A few general rules concerning the map so as to ensure "success:"

  • See the full-size version of the map to avoid pixilation.
  • Make all nations different colors.
  • Try to make one for each half-year.
  • Colored circles on nations mean they are a protectorate, client/satellite state, etc., of another nation.
  • It's not always beneficial to draw border lines willy nilly; if possible, try to find resources displaying previously existing borders.

Changelog and Map Discussion[]

The changelog and discussion of the map is on the talk page.

Nations[]

If you have a creative idea for your nation that is not listed here, add it, but make sure you include some sort of back story when you make your first post. Even if an existing nation is not listed here you can still claim it if it is not already claimed. Make sure you read the Pre-Apocalypse Timeline. The United States, (the nation, not the remnants of it) is moderator only as of right now.

2010.75[]

The first total lunar eclipse to occur on the day of the Northern winter solstice and Southern summer solstice since 1638 takes place.

Researchers at CERN trap 38 antihydrogen atoms for a sixth of a second, marking the first time in history that humans have trapped anti-matter.

A stampede during Bon Om Thook (Khmer Water Festival) celebrations in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, kills 347.

Following a vote on the floor of the European union, it is decided that a joint military operation must be launched into Eastern Europe to contain the Zombie infection and prevent it from spreading farther into Europe. Several nations are expected to provide aid for the assault.

Japan: Japan continues to build up the Self Defence Forces and infrastructure is improved. Some of the Maritime Self Defence Force still continues to patrol around Japan. Synthpop, Electro, Techno, and Trance continue to rise in popularity. The Republic of Kyushu continues to rebuild the island. Tatsunori Katsumata and ZUN finishes creating the next Touhou game, Double Spoiler. Double Spoiler is released and gets excellent sales. Chihei Hatakeyama's radio show/station, "A State of Trance" rises in popularity. The Self Defence Forces remain on high alert throughout Japan and the Republic of Kyushu. And clean up continues for those affected by the earthquake and the train incident, and continues aid and clean up for those affected by the recent earthquake. Nico Nico Douga rises in popularity.

Oceania: We secretly retrieve three Zombie specimens from an infected area in Europe. The first one is injected with the phlaxicortin medicine. It is a successful cure. The second one is gassed using the plexicortin mist. Though it takes about 15 minutes for the reaction to have i's effects take affect, it is successfully cured. State-Owned medical corporations begin to produce shootable needles and more plexicortin mist liquid. We offer to sell the medicne at cheap prices to the European Union and other nations.

Neo-Mughal Empire: The empire continues all programs and flooding recovery operations, which proceed well because of the aid from CSC. Industry increases by 0.25.

Burma: Construction is still on schedule for the Space Gun and is expected to continue this way until finished. The Anti-Zombie squad has been fully trained to the best of our capabilities and is in standby at our borders in case of an emergency and we will be glad to send some to the Zombie infection in Europe if the nations want our aid in the matter.

RoC: The 30th satellite is sent into space. We give Korea some of our satellite and spacecraft plans due to our space co-operation. We start building a large dam over the Yangtze River. We continue constructing a huge city in Shizhuang to promote people moving in. Our army now reaches 1,500,000 men, who are trained vigorously. We build five Black Hawk-10's. We begin using our large population to produce cheap industrial goods and exporting them. Work begins on the large dam over the Yangtze River. We continue "People's Defenders" as it increased gun production and stimulated the economy. We continue a faster train program and we finish the part from Beijing to Jinan and the part from Nanking to Wuhan. Our population reaches 850 million. Adventure Time continues to raise in popularity with a 10% watched rate (10 million families are watching the show everyday). We send scientists to Oceania to help them find a cure to the virus. We send a small operational force of 10,000 men to Russia to help them control the Zombie infection.

Federation of Arabia: Gold continues to be mined in the Cradle of Gold for use as "Currency Bonds" to keep up with increasing popularity. The agricultural reforms for the Federation continue to be successful, further stabilizing crop prices and reducing importation and reliance on foreign agriculture. Oman's agriculture yield continues to grow, slowly but strongly. Influence continues on Egypt, the Somali government. Influence continues on Sudan. Talks continue in the Federation for turning it into an Islamic Republic and now the UIC, Oman, Jordan, Kuwait, Iraq, Syria, Palestine, Qatar, UAE, and Bahrain support it. Saudi Arabia and Israel still oppose it; Saudi Arabia because they fear a loss of power with the equalization of all member nations, and Israel because they wish to go no further into friendliness with their conquerors. The third nuclear power plant begins construction in the Syrian-Iraqi desert, using the same designs as the two previous plants. More soldiers are moved to Syria and Iraq to be ready for any outbreak of war. Our deployed soldiers, along with the EHU's, remain in Somalia. We threaten with intervention in Turkey if they do not end their military development now. Our navy continues to patrol the coasts of Turkey, and we increase the amount of ships there, increasing our navy score by 0.25.

Germany: Trade and tourism from fellow European Union nations raise as people move freely across the border. We are happy to welcome the nations of Poland, Bohemia, Slovakia, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Belarus, Ukraine, Hungary, the Channel League, and Italy into the European Union. We continue upgrading army and navy capabilities. The recently built Habsburg-class aircraft carriers; the Karl von Habsburg, the Maria Theresa, the Charles the Hammer, Großdeutschland, the Vienna, the Franz Joseph, and the Schönbrunn Palace are placed into carrier battle groups and stationed along Germany’s coast. Shipyards from earlier times are reopened and upgraded to fit modern ships. We continue to influence Malta, Croatia and the new Swiss regime. We begin investing highly in alternative fuels to reduce our use of fossil fuels. Nuclear power plants begin construction in certain urban areas, while hydroelectric and wind power become popular across the country. Citizens are also encouraged to invest in personal solar panels to power their homes. Highways and major roads are upgraded to allow more travel between European nations. The Autobahn especially becomes highly developed. With threats of a Zombie outbreak appearing across the Netherlands our borders are put on high alert. The military is positioned along the border to screen travelers for signs of the infection, and to screen shipments and ensure that biological weapons are not being smuggled across the border. Our force in the Netherlands continues to clear the southern provinces of infection, and by now most of the Netherlands has been cleared. We begin pushing for a European Union-led operation to clear the infected areas in Russia. We are overjoyed with our performance this year in the FIFA World Cup.

Switzerland: Feeling secure from the aid the European Union and our other allies have provided in the past years, the entirety of our armed forces have now been demobilized. Production of military vehicles and weapons are cut back slightly. We agree to Germany’s plan for the Schengen Area, and are happy to add more nations to the European Union. More focus is put toward infrastructure. New factories are built. Our many universities and technical schools continue to be popular among Europeans. In addition to this there our various Universities of Applied Sciences are invested in. Our business and management studies universities; University of St. Gallen, (HSG) and International Institute for Management Development (IMD), begin to become regarded as some of the best in Europe. Alternative fuels are invested in, with a goal of reaching less dependency on foreign or fossil fuels. Within a few years we expect our total amount of electricity generated to be 56% from hydroelectricity, 39% from nuclear power. We begin moving toward this goal, further removing all use of fossil fuels. Wind turbines from Germany and other nations are also used. With the proton beam circulated for the first time in the Large Hadron Collider, the world's largest and highest-energy particle accelerator, located at CERN, near Geneva, under the Franco-Swiss border, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is officially inaugurated and goes into operation. (Fritzmet told me to post this.)

Congo: Regional governments are reformed in the Central African Republic and the Republic of the Congo, with local officials being elected. We send aid to the former South African territories ravaged by war, rebuilding some cities that were destroyed. By now most nations formerly owned by South Africa have established democratic governments. Large mines are opened across the country, controlled and protected by the government. This is expected to be complete halfway through the testing period, until then we will just be testing with the weight and shape of the capsules and if any thing goes wrong there will be a parachute attatched to the capsules and if that fails there will be a small implosive device that will break the capsule into smaller pieces so that it doesn't do too much damage to anything on the ground even thought the test capsules will be fired toward the ocean side of its arc.

Like Burma, our own National Anti-Zombie Personnel (formerly the Californian Unification and Anti-Zombie Expeditionary Forces) are also being trained in case of an outbreak in any of the surrounding areas, not that its likely that one will occur this far west of the current outbreak but its better to be safe then sorry, we will be training at least 15,000 troops in this field but they will also be manning the border posts when their training is complete so that they are available Like Chan Santa Cruz,  posters giving advice on what to do in the event of an outbreak are distributed. Saudi Arabia now supports it due to the promise that they will stay the head state of the Islamic Republic. Israel still oppose it; , and Israel because they wish to go no further into friendliness with their conquerors.  More soldiers are moved to Syria and Iraq to be ready for any outbreak of war. Our deployed soldiers, along with the EHU's, remain in Somalia. We send delegates, several from the Federation, to meet with North and South Sudan to attempt to negotiate some sort of unification or peaceful recogniztion process. Due to Turkey's ignoring of our demands, we fire off our multiple SCUD-B, SCARAB-A, and FROG-7 missiles at Turkish military installations. Oceania: Some guy named Oreo Toast comes to power in an election and gives free toast and oreo cookies to anyone who wants them. He declares them a right.

  • Burma: We would like to congratulate Oreo Toast on his recent success and were wondering if he would be willing to send one gazillion shipments of toast and oreos to Burma.
  • The Netherlands: Oreo Toast is considered a national hero as he saves many people with - you guessed it - Oreo Toast.
  • Oceania: We produce 999 kazillion oreos and toasts and send one gazillion shipments to each nation on the planet. People rejoice.

Burma: We have had a recent attack on the Space Gun and the terrorist fired the gun with a stolen module filled with explosives and fired it directly toward the moon at full power. The module was considerably lighter then the other ones and hit the moon at the Apollo 11 landing site and blew up the equipment there and the American flag was last seen burning up in the atmosphere of the earth when it was coming back down. (not a serious turn but the game is nearly over and not many people are playing, speaking of which can aternix and I invade the world?)

Wait for the ASB turn. The game is almost over.

Mughal Empire: All operations continue. The Emperor becomes Emperor of the universe (jk).

Throwing this out there, but, the American flag on the moon, by this time, would be just a white piece of rectangular cloth on a metal pole, not colored at all.

It's in space and there is no atmosphere to degrade the colours. It's exactly the same as it was when they first put it there.

The fact that there is no atmosphere means there is nothing to protect the flag from the sun's rays which causes fading of colors.

Their attack enrages current Federal nations, and leads to military commanders, led by Syria's General Ali Abdullah Ayyoub, to begin Operation Mehmet, which will lead to an all out offensive against many of Turkey's adjancent lands. We give our condolences to the United States for the loss of their embassy and their people there, and offer to aid in the investigation in Libya.

Conclusion[]

President Barack Obama glances out the window of the oval office, as Chuck Hagel, Secretary of Defense sits across the desk. What he read the night before still puzzled him. In the contents of Abraham Lincoln’s desk, stashed among several stacks of important files and notes he first found the file, dated by President Johnson, and Kennedy before him. He thought once more about that first page. The word 'confidential' across the top.

On January 20, 1961 Kennedy was inaugurated as president of the United States. Dwight Eisenhower, who handed the task to Kennedy, also placed a heavy problem on his shoulders: Vietnam. The domino effect was simple enough. If the United States didn’t intervene soon all of southeast Asia would fall to the Soviet Union’s treachery.

Kennedy, looking to end the fighting in Vietnam signed off on a top secret project known as Operation: Butterfly, a biological weapons program that many in the US government believed could be used to secretly turn the tide in Vietnam.

With the war escalating quickly, President Johnson would intensify the program. Early tests on primates created a sleepy, death-like effect, which the scientists believed could be used on Viet Cong forces. Members of the group of scientists begin to feel like they could make more money from private investors, but the government insisted they keep the project in the hands of Americans only.

With the new year approaching Night of the Living Dead was released. Several members of the group were expected to be terminated from work. Feeling that the government had what it needed, the program was shut down. It was found that the infection had leaked from containment, and news of sick individuals appeared all across the Southwest.

What a perfect cover up the film was. The government made it seem as if the scientists were self-funded, looking to recreate effects from the movie. On 30 March the FBI raided the compound, arresting those inside. The group was led by secret convoy to Marine Corps Air Station Yuma until further notice. Little did we know that the infection had its own plan.

The president could hardly believe it at first. How could they have let it come to this? Or was this what they wanted all along? A different future, where America’s fate was forever changed. After all, who knows what would have happened if the US hadn't left Vietnam when it did? Or if the USSR hadn't dissolved in 1986? The fan fictions on the internet would have a field day.

“How strange the world is sometimes,” sighed the president aloud, “Some things this world just isn't ready for.” He took the folder off his desk and tossed it back into his desk. Across the nation reconstruction had begun. This once great nation, and all of the world bled ryfrom the Great War to preserve the human race, but slowly from the ashes, he knew that we would rise again.

The game has ended. Thank you for playing. Go now in peace.
