History[]
Transportation[]
Since the early 1950s, China's national road network has been significantly expanded through the creation of a network of national highways and expressways. By 2010, China's highways had reached a total length of 235,000 km, netting it as the world's longest highway system. China also has the world's largest market for automobiles in both auto sales and production. Bicycles also remain a significant mode of transportation, primarily in urban areas, and focus on further increasing bicycle-friendly roads and areas were made since the early 2000s.
The China Railway Group, established in 1850, is a state-owned company since its inception. As of 2017, the country had 210,000 km of railways, the longest network in the world. The railways strain to meet enormous demand particularly during the Chinese New Year holiday, when the world's largest annual human migration takes place. China's high-speed rail (HSR) system started construction in the early 1970s. By the end of 2020, high speed rail in China had reached 86,900 kilometers of dedicated lines alone.
