Overview[]

The Central African Republic (CAR) is a landlocked country located in the very centre of Africa.

The local Bantu, Chadic and Sudanic people overran most of the Pigmies in circa 900- 1000AD. The CAR then became part of  the French colony of Equatorial Africa and then the separate colonies of Ubangui Chari. It gained independence in 1960.

The south is rain forest, the north is savanna and the rest is rain forest and wetter types of grassland. Most transport is done using the few aircraft available and minor ferry boats on the River Oubangui.

It is agrarian by nature. The economy is based on minor subsistence agriculture, but has diamonds, gold, iron, wood, cotton and bananas. The crops grown are mostly for subsistence level as they make little profit.  However, cotton and timber industries and diamond mining has the potential of becoming a very lucrative business.

Political instability and corruption would plague the country as would malaria and dengue fever. A series of droughts have often put the population at risk of starvation.

The roads west to Sudan and north to Chad are poorly maintained.

History[]

Basse-Kotto and Sangha-Mbaéré were damaged in an abortive attack by Zaïre in 1974.5. The repair work took a year to do.

Mobaye, Bimbo and Kouango, Bangui, Nola and Bambari became more defensively prepared by the army and localised militiamen in 1975 and 1975.5.

The police set up defensive barriers and check points across Bangui, Birao, Bankora and Bambari in 1975.5.

Tax evaders and tribal rebels occurred in Haut-Mbomou and Vakaga prefectures in 1975.5. The police were on the lookout for northern tribal rebels and tax evaders in Vakaga prefecture. Some tribal issues had arisen with Nilo-Saharan tribes on the border of Sudan, when they started refusing to pay their taxes in 1975.5. and 1976. Mobaye, Bimbo and Kouango, Birao, Bangui, Nola and Bambari become more defensively prepared by the police 1975.5 and 1976.

The towns of Bingo, Bimbo, Birao and Bangui had some anti-corruption rallies and riots, but the few in the capital, Bangui were then crushed in 1976. The president ordered a crackdown on the rebels and had 16 northern tax evaders shot out of hand. In a radio speech he blamed the French government for stabbing him in the back and tells the nation it was he and he alone that planned allthe mining stuff! Former president David Dacko and General André-Dieudonné Kolingba united against the government in a unholy alliance on the streets of Bimbo as violent clashes occur in the town.

Former president David Dacko and General André-Dieudonné Kolingba were still united against the government in a unholy alliance on the streets of Bimbo as violent clashes occurred later in the town. David Dacko declared himself president, as Bambari fell to the rebels. The president hid in his fortified palace as rioters and police clashed in Nola and Bangui. The Ministry of Finance has driven off some looters and gangsters outside it, who tried to hijack a rebel rally. The towns of Bingo, Bimbo, Birao, Bankora and Paoua also had some lesser anti-corruption rallies and rioting.

David Dacko became de facto president in 1976.5. Also see this- Presidents of the Central African Republic (Axis vs Allies: Revolutions Map Game).

President David Dacko likes and thus agrees to the Japanese trade and atomic Bossaka era deals in 1977. Jean-Bédel Bokassa is ill with flu in Nola. Propaganda is issued to the people of the Gbaya tribe in nearby parts of Cameroon and a couple of Chadian border villages gently reminding of their cultural kinship with the Gbaya of the CAR after 1978.

A small steel mill and furnace open in Bangui in 1978.

Ex-president Jean-Bédel Bokassa is found by police and put under house arrest in his Nola residence.

A trade and defense alliance called the Central African Community was set up. Ambassadors were invited from Sao Tome and Principe, Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad, Sudan, Equatorial Guinean, Burundi and Togo (Equatorial Guinea already has a bilateral trade deal and has morally already joined the economical wing). Sao Tome and Principe takes both, Chad goes economic and Cameroon goes defence alliance

A bus strike occurred over pay and a series of bad bush fires near Bira are quickly dealt with. Nuclear bombs are banned in the CAR. The CAR sets up a wild life reserve near Nola.

A diplomatic mission goes to the big West African state (that covers OTL Niger, Mali and so on), called the West African Republic, that used to be French West Africa and to Botswana to start diplomatic relations in 1978. The W.A.R. quickly agrees, but Botswana declined the offer.

It was raised in the Organization of African Unity in 1978.5 that Korea was sniffing around North Africa and tried to subvert Egypt, Libya-Tunisia, Sudan and Algeria six months earlier. The CAR was scared since it is weak, due to low population and then still poor development. A request is set forth that Korea can't be let go beyond Egypt or face trade sanctions! If any other African nation is attacked then the AU should stand as one on the battlefield against colonialism. South Africa and Zimbabwe-Rhodesia were accused of racism and a call was made by the CAR to all Black African nations to topple the Whites-only governments. A 50/%50 joint mining deal in the limestone bed in Vakaga province in which kaolin, kyanite, limestone and quartz can be mined was also shoved in Libya's face in an act of naked bribery, just for good measure.

The OAU agreed to oppose Korean expansion and backed the ending of Apartheid, which sparked of a Black rebellion in S. Africa. Libya agreed with the OAU, but was moved by its conscience, not because the CAR bribe.

Overseas aid (limited food, clothing, planks, human labour and limited fuel) is sent to flood/tsunami victims in Sao Tome and Principe, Equatorial Guinea, coastal parts of Cameroon and coastal parts of Greater Zaire and coastal Angola after the 9.0 Brazilian coastal earthquake of 1978.5. The tidal wave was eight feet as it hit the cost of Rio Muni in Equatorial Guinea, killing about 60% in the 1 mile inland danger zone. David Dacko hears a few days later on VOA radio and on Radio Moscow that it's 50% worse in Brazil. David cries and declaers a week of national morning in the CAR.

Lots of Japanese built schools and hospitals opened in 1978.5.

The CAR welcomed the recent events and the 1978.5  Black anti-Apartheid revolt in S. Africa.

Zaire begins investing in the CAR, and expansion of the railway system north is planned to connect Bangui with Kinshasa in 1979 and it was completed in 1980.

The Gabya tribal propaganda campaign was judged a failure and scrapped in 1979.5. Many farms open and new bus services are made available that year. Good relations are offered to S. Africa. The CAR joined the Zairian war with the Rhodesian Whites in 1979.5. A railway line from Cameroon port of Kribi to Bangui was also proposed that year.

The CAR starting up the Gbaya kinship propaganda mill in 1980 and begin to subvert a few of their tribal brothers in Cameroon. Nelson Mandella is hailed as a hero in the CAR that year.  The Mokambo Copper mine project on the Mufulira, Zaïre is awesome and David Dacko says he thinks it’s Africa’s greatest.

The Canadian and Cameroonian union offer of 1980.5 is taken up. The Cameroons (the Gbaya propaganda is still in use) is invited as is the Chad, EG and STP. The sparse northern provinces of 21, 6, 7, 4, 9, 5, 1 and 17 on this map [[1]] leave Chad in a nationalist Islamic way, since they are Arab, Berber, Tombou and Sudanese Arab types and they boast their pro-Libyan and pro-Sudan credentials. Chad's Province 9 rioted and joined the W.A.R. since it's all Francophone OTL Niger types. The largely Christian south becomes a client state. The states of North, Adamawa and East [[2]] join their Gbaya brothers in the CAR and the rest becomes a client state, save for Extreme North,  who joins South Chad. Anglophile Northwest Province riots badly and joins Nigeria on grounds of culture, tribe and creed. ties with Sao Tome and Principe are strengthened if they want it. Equatorial Guinea just gets shirty and moody, they say nah, not interested. (The CAR says its expanding was over, so it stays plausible.).

The CAR improves its roads somewhat, especially in the north in 1985. In 1985.5 the CAR issues virulent propaganda flyers and an agitating radio broadcast. Starts a minor Gbaya, Banda, Baka and Maka-Njem and a Baka tribal rebellion in Zaire's border towns. The 180,000 Yakoma and Banda flee north to the CAR, whilst the rest of the agitated tribesmen take over Dongu district and the town of Zingo across the water from Bangui. It was a surprise attack and so the CAR and its client states of Cameroon and South Chad got their way. Zaire regains most of the land in a tough battle, except the upper 25% of Dongo and the town of Zongo. Mass recruiting occurs, so the CAR signs up 6,000 soldiers, 200 cops and 200 doctors. It begins to build four light fighter planes and two light civil passenger aircraft of its own. Pill-box type bunkers are constructed in Bangui, Bakoma and Noya. The CAR calls upon the West African Republic to help fight the enemies of democracy and said that the Yakoma and Banda were being forced to adopt Swahili/Kikongo/Tekie culture and languages against their will by Zaire. A request for support is sent to its allies- Canada, Argentina, Australia, Japan, Brazil and the West African Republic. CAR deaths are heavy, but sustainable and a truce is offered to Zaire. Brazil gave aid to the CAR in their war.

By 1986 the CAR was flourishing: All our mines become operational, Cameroon, San Tome and Principe and south Chad form a fiscal union, due to previous treaty laws, with the CAR and David Dacko retires as a hero. General Kolingba takes over peaceably. Peace and harmony is made with Zaire, Egypt, The USAS (S. Africa, et al) and Libya. The Japanese-made Bangui reactor is reopened and slightly upgraded. A DC-10 copy is successfully flown around Bangui and adult literacy stands at 99% in Sango, 55% in French and 12% in Kikongo. Life expectancy is raised to 65 years by the death of Malaria carrying flies in urban places. Zaire's troops are removed and Brazil becomes the new protecting power. Infrastructure, power lines, sewers and water pipes are improved.

Transport[]

Sadly, the nation's roads and railways are too underdeveloped to to do much. Japan, the USA and Zaire are developing better ones as part of an aid deal. There are a few light cargo, heavy cargo and light passenger aircraft. There are seven ferries on the River Oubangui  (one ex-Argentine, one ex-Brazilian and one ex-Danish). Some freight and fishing ships sail down the Oubangui into the River Congo to get to the sea. The roads west to Sudan and north to Chad are poorly maintained.

A small industrial airstrip opens in in Bakouma town in 1976.

A fire in the capital destroys the central bus station in 1977, but rebuilt with in six months.

Roads were noticeably upgraded in 1977.5. A Canadian-made new highway system was started in 1978.

A small port is added to the lower reaches of the Oubangui River. There is an international airport at Bangui-Mpoko, replacing the nearby single airstrip ex-colonial airport in 1978.

A bus strike occurred over pay was quickly dealt with that year.

A small port and a navy jetty is built on the lower reaches of the River Kotto in 1979.

A new Ferry boat, 5 non bulk ore carrying ships and a navy patrol boat are all built in 1979. Many new buss services are made available in 1979.5. 3 Canadian built highways that are running north, west, and south from Nola were finished.  A line from Cameroon port of Kribi to Bangui was proposed. Small ports open in Bangui, Nola, Salo, Nzinga. Zaire begins investing in the CAR, and expansion of the railway system north is planned to connect Bangui with Kinshasa in 1979 and it was completed in 1980.

More cars and vans are made in 1980.5. The burnt down Bangui Central Bus Station is rebuilt after a second fire in 1980. A new drive begins on a Bangui-Kinshasa motorway to go via Brazzaville and Nola.

A mutually beneficial freight and passenger line from the Cameroon port of Kribi to Bangui, via Yolande and Nola is passed into law and begins in 1980.5, with an end date of 1981.5.

Road links to N'Djamena and Bertoua are enhanced. 1980.5

A trade deal and alliance were made with the USA in 1975, and with both Zaire and Japan in 1975.5. A central African trading block grouping is put forward (CAR, Zaïre, Cameroon, Rwanda, Burundi, Chad, Equatorial Guinea, Nigeria and Angola) in 1975.5. It is allied with Zaïre formed a trading and industrial partnership with the CAR that year. A CAR-EG trade deal was made in 1976.5.
