Avalon is an independent city-state off the coast of southern California near the former city of Los Angeles. The city was the primary population center of the island of Santa Catalina, California. In the present day it exists beside the United Islands of Pacifica, a military republic that serves the region as a protector against attack by sea-faring bandits (pirates).
The population of the island is almost entirely made up of descendants of the population that lived there on September 25, 1983. As a result of the tragedy known as "Doomsday," the residents became a 'classless' society where 'servants' and 'aristocrats' became of one kind in the struggle for survival.
