The French West Indies (French: Antilles Françaises), also known as the West Indies and abbreviated as FWI, is an overseas department of France, located in the Caribbean. It is made up of nine districts, and comprising of more than 195 islands.

The islands were originally colonized by the French, British and Dutch. Several islands were transferred to France when the Dutch Republic fell and was replaced by the Batavian Republic. The majority of the island were individual colonies under French/British rule, many of which were disputed. The West Indies formed as a result of World War II when the British were defeated at the hands of the French, and gave up possession of their Caribbean islands. Many islands were redistributed into new districts.
