Calvin Coolidge

In 1928, President Calvin Coolidge sees Hoover as the front-runner for the Republican nomination, then chooses to run for another term to prevent him from doing so. President Coolidge is easily re-nominated and re-elected, and then continues the same economic policies that kept the twenties "roaring," and vetoes Smoot-Hawley. As a result, there is a slight 6-month recession in early '29, ended by cuts in spending and corporation taxes, as well as the complete abolishing of the income tax. Thus there is no Great Depression, and in 1932, freshman Senator Robert Taft, the rising star of the Republican Party ("Mr. Republican") receives the Republican nomination with overwhelming support, and winning the general election in a landslide.
