The American Basketball Association (ABA) is the primary professional basketball league of the United States. It was founded in 1946 with an initial 14 teams, and in 1976, a buy-out of its primary competitors – the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the Pacific Basketball League (PBL) – nearly doubled the number of teams and greatly increased the overall talent pool.

The ABA currently consists of 40 teams, divided between the Eastern and Western Conferences, with the Eastern Conference made up of the Atlantic, Cental, and Southeast divisions, while the Western Conference consists of the Midwest, Southwest, and Pacific divisions. Every year between April and June, the ABA playoffs take place, in which 16 teams (8 Western & 8 Eastern) compete in a tournament for a best-of-seven series (the ABA Finals).
