Sardinia is an island off the coast of Italy sharing maritime borders with the French island of Corsica.
History[]
The island hosted several NATO and Italian Armed Forces base. It was for this reason the Soviet Union invaded Sardinia in hopes of crushing a potential NATO resistance after their strategic victory in the Mediterranean Sea. The Soviets were only able to occupy roughly 40% of the island as the NATO forces there poised a great resistance to the invaders.
When the war turned into the favor of the Allies, the NATO forces holding out received additional reinforcements; they were able to expel the Soviets out of the island.
