In December of 1914, this small brass box, embossed with the image and monogram of Britain's Princess Mary (daughter of King George V and Queen Mary), was given to each of Britain's troops at the front as a Christmas present.  It was offered by way of an apology for their still being at the front at Christmastime, when they had been promised it would all be over by then.  Contents varied according to availability, but tended to be items like monogrammed cigarettes, antacid tablets, stationery and an item which appeared to be a .303 rifle shell but which broke apart to reveal a pencil.  Every box included a Christmas card and a photograph of the Princess.
