The Territory of Fiji (Fijian: Matanitu ko Viti), commonly known as Fiji and historically New Netherlander Polynesia, is an unincorporated territory of the Union of New Netherland which governs several islands within the Pacific Ocean. Along with Micronesia and Tonga, Fiji forms part of the New Netherlander Colonial Empire. The territory unites the many Polynesian islands claimed by New Netherland, including the Ellice Islands, the Fijian Islands, and the Rotuman Islands (each with a distinct history).
The islands were officially claimed in 1885 as part of New Netherland's expansion into the Pacific. The claims were organized into a single territory in 1898. The territory also included Tonga until 1900 when they became a sovereign protectorate.
