Ferdinand Emmanuel Edralín Marcos was the 10th President of the Philippines, and the first of the People's Republic of the Philippines. As Philippine president and strongman, his greatest achievement was in the fields of infrastructure development and international diplomacy. However, his regime is notable for its authoritarian, repressive and corrupt nature. During his tenure, Marcos had set about creating a large personality cult comparable to those of the leaders of Communist Russia and China.
Due to a drop off in appearances, it was widely suspected that Marcos actually died at some time in the late 1980's or early 1990's, and that a military junta had secretly lead the nation after his death for a short time.
His successor is María Corazón Cojuangco-Aquino.
