In 1859, people had the right to decide what form of government was more adapt to newborn Italy. The Federalist plan failed because Giuseppe Garibaldi, Giuseppe Mazzini and Victor Emmanuel II of Italy were against it.

What if... Italians voted for Federalist choice and Garibaldi, Mazzini and Victor Emmanuel supported the choice, therefore bringing the newborn Italy being a Federal Republic?

  • After the Second War of Italian Independence, Sardinia annexed Modena-Reggio, Parma-Piacenza, Tuscany, Papal Legations, Naples and most of the Papal States.
  • Italians had the right to decide what form of government was more adapt to the newborn country. They chose the Federalist option, promoted by Carlo Cattaneo.
