On December 18, 1997, comedian Chris Farley overdoses on cocaine and morphine in the John Hancock Center in Chicago. However, a prostitute, Heidi Brown, managed to call an ambulance in time to save his life.

In May 1998, Farley was released from rehab in Culver City, California. After the event, Farley continues acting.

On November 30, 1998, the film The Gelfin, a comedy-horror fantasy film starring Farley and Vince Vaughn, was released in Chicago, Illinois, to critical and commercial acclaim. The film, based on a cancelled 1922 project that was to feature Fatty Arbuckle, was released in conjunction with the announcement of a Fatty Arbuckle biopic to be filmed, with Farley in the lead role.

On June 1, 1999, Fatty is released to theaters everywhere. It featured extremely positive reviews and grossed over 874 million dollars worldwide, becoming the 32nd highest grossing film in history. The film was nominated for 13 Academy Awards, winning four (Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography) at the 72nd Academy Awards in March of 2000.
