Fallout is a series of post-apocalyptic role-playing games (RPGs). The games are set in the 22nd and 23rd centuries in the aftermath of a worldwide nuclear exchange. Its settings are retro futuristic, inspired by the culture of America in the 1950s and 1960s: its hope of technological advancement and the fear of nuclear annihilation.

Released in 2000, Fallout is the first game in the series. The protagonist, known as the Vault Dweller, sets out from his underground bunker to find a water chip that is necessary for the inhabitants of his vault to survive. The Vault Dweller must traverse the post-apocalyptic ruins of Southern California to find the water chip, and later thwart the plans of an army of mutants and its leader, the Master.

Fallout 2

Released in 2003, Fallout 2 is the direct sequel to the first game. A descendant of the Vault Dweller, the Chosen One, is tasked by his tribal village of Arroyo to find a Garden of Eden Creation Kit (G.E.C.K) that will keep the tribe from perishing. Set in Northern California, the Chosen One eventually learns of the evil Enclave, a faction descended from the pre-war United States government, and their plot to exterminate all life in the remnants of the United States so they can resettle it themselves. The Chosen One foils their plans and retrieves the GECK, saving their village.

Fallout 3

Released in 2007, Fallout 3 switches the setting to the eastern seaboard, specifically in the ruins of Washington DC and the surrounding region.

Fallout: New Vegas

Released in 2010, Fallout New Vegas is a spiritual successor to the first two games, returning the series to the West Coast in the Mojave Desert. Thanks to effort of Robert House, Las Vegas war nearly spared from the nuclear war, but is now caught in the middle of the final, climatic battle between the New California Republic and Caesar's Legion for control of Hoover Dam, New Vegas, and the Mojave. The player character, the Courier, is shot in the head, left for dead, and his mysterious package is stolen. Fueled by revenge, the Courier pursues his unknown assailant, and becomes entangled in the upcoming battle, supporting either the NCR, the Legion, Mr. House, or his own faction.

Fallout 4

The upcoming game is due for release in November 2015, set in the ruins of Boston known as the Commonwealth.
