In the 4th century A.D. the eastern Roman empire falls, with the last emperor, Zeno, being dethroned in 472 A.D. Theodosius II, emperor of the east, decides not to pay barbarians and the Huns tribute has the Byzantines had done before because he considers it un-Roman, and this is the first of many events that eventually led to barbarian tribes invading and plundering much of Thrace, Macedonia, Greece, Asia Minor, Dacia, and Palestine (except Egypt). Attila himself and the rest of the Huns plowed through Thrace into Macedonia and Greece, eventually sacking Constantinople.
