The European migrant crisis, or European refugee crisis, began in 2015 when a rising number of refugees and migrants made journeys across the Mediterrean Sea to Europe, coming mainly from Western and South Asia, Africa and the West Balkans. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the top three nationalities of the over one million Mediterranean Sea arrivals in 2015 were Syrian (49%), Afghan (21%) and Iraqi (8%).

However, in 2016 the UN Peacekeeping Mission in Kurdistan, Syria and Iraq has lead to the creation of 'safe camps' in these countries, slowing the need for movement out. Despite this, the crisis continues.
