The European Community (EC) is an economic and political union of 33 member states which are located primarily in Europe. Committed to regional integration, the EC was established by the Treaty of Rome in 1957.
The EC has developed a single market through a standardized system of laws which apply in all member states, and ensures the free movement of people, goods, services, and capital, including the abolition of passport controls by the Schengen Agreement. It maintains common policies on trade, agriculture, fisheries and regional development. The 33 member states have adopted a common currency, the Euro, constituting the Eurozone.
As a legal personality the EC is able to conclude treaties with countries and enacts legislation in justice and home affairs. It has devised the Common Foreign and Security Policy, thus developing a limited role in European defense and foreign policy. Permanent diplomatic missions of the EC are established around the world and representation at the World Trade Organization, G8, G-20 major economies and at the United Nations is maintained.
The EC operates through a hybrid system of supranationalism and intergovernmentalism. In certain areas, decisions are taken by independent supranational institutions, while in others, they are made through negotiation between member states. Important institutions of the EC include the European Commission, the Council of the European Community, the European Community, the Court of Justice of the European Community, and the European Central Bank. The European Parliament is elected every five years by member states' citizens, to whom the citizenship of the European Community is guaranteed.
The EC traces its origins Treaty of Rome formed in 1957 by 24 countries. Since then, it has grown in size through enlargement, and in power through the addition of policy areas to its remit.
It was not until the 1980's that the EC start to have more autonomy, because originally it was an organization of German Hegemony and Germanization of Europe, even the EC Headquarters which are located in Berlin (There is an actual dispute to change it to a new place like Paris, Vienna, Athens, Amsterdam, and others) had the German flag like 3 times bigger than the others, which all even today strike vertically in the Headquarters columns. But since the mid-1960's the Modern Renaissance has bring a more cultural and free non-fascist EC and a real Europe or as some artist and architects of the Modern Renaissance call it, Heute Europa.

The Headquarters were design by Albert Speer, and finished in 1958, in the German capital city of Berlin. It is know as the Palace of Europe. Today there is a debate of changing the Headquarter to another city, and to build a more positive and artistic Headquarter.
