Eugeniusz of Poland (German: Eugen Leopold Adelaide Thomas Maria) (July 16, 1925 – January 1, 1997) of the House of Wittelsbach was the final King of Poland. He abdicated after the Polish Round Table Agreement in 1989 led to democratic elections in Poland.
Eugeniusz was born in Warsaw and was the only son of King Konrad II of Poland and his wife Queen Bona Margherita. At the time of his birth Eugeniusz was second in line to the young Polish throne behind his father. Upon the death of his grandfather, King Leopold, his father became king and the five year old Eugeniusz was made Crown Prince of Poland.
At the start of World War II Eugeniusz along with his mother and sister fled to Germany where the former Bavarian King Rupprecht had offered them refuge while Poland was in danger of invasion. After the war the Polish royals returned to Poland where the crown prince received private tutoring.
On September 6, 1969 at the age of 43 Eugeniusz succeeded his father as king of Poland.
On November 16, 1970 Eugeniusz married Countess Helene von Khevenhüller-Metsch. Countess Helene was previously married to Prince Konstantin of Bavaria who lost his life in a tragic plane crash on July 30, 1969. The ceremony took place in Warsaw. The couple did not have any children together.
