Ernst Thälmann (or Thaelmann when the umlaut is not available) (16 April 1886 - 13 September 1951) was the first President of the Socialist Republic of Germany. As the leader of both North Germany and the Communist Party of Germany, he was also the Supreme Commander of the Rotfrontkämpferbund, North Germany's military. He helped to establish the institutions of North Germany and was instrumental in securing the future of Socialist Germany. He was succeeded by his Prime Minister, Walter Ulbricht.
