The United States presidential election of 1952 was the 42nd quadrennial presidential election. It was held on Tuesday, November 4, 1952. The Democratic nominee, incumbent President Richard Russell, and his running mate, Vice President Harry Byrd, were re-elected to a second term, defeating the Republican nominee, California governor Earl Warren, and his running mate, governor Harold Stassen of Minnesota.
As the incumbent president, Russell secured the Democratic nomination with no serious opposition. Warren fought the conservative wing of the GOP to win the nomination and many were surprised when he was successful, with most conservatives at a national level already pledging support to Russell. The campaign was marked by a sharp rise in fundraising, and focused mostly in foreign affairs- the escalating Cold War, and Russell's leadership in the Korean War. Russell's pro-business policies were perceived as speeding up economic growth in the 1949-1952 period and generally liked, while Warren was less dedicated to any position and overall mysterious about his vision for the second half of the "American" century.
