[edit] History

Before World War 3, most of these islands in the Caribbean were either independent states, or territories of other countries. These islands were heavily dependent on these wealthy nations for tourism and sugarcane, both of which made up most of there respective economies. However after doomsday these industries collapsed after the destruction of the US, Canada, and the European states.

The economies of these islands were essentially cut in half, plunging them into a massive economic depression. With the South American countries fairing little better at the time these islands were left with no choice but to seek help from each other. Within months regional government in the Caribbean had overpowered local ones. Eventually they began to create a loose federation to unite these islands through there hardships.

A similar confederation of the West Indies had been proposed some years ago and failed due to nationalist tensions between the islands, these were soon forgotten thanks to the apparent success in this new federation. Soon most of the islands in the Caribbean had been absorbed into the East Caribbean, with the flag and symbols of the old West Indies Federation becoming the ones used by the present day country.

While nationalist movements in Jamaica and Trinidad have again threatened to tear apart the union on several occasions, so far these movements have been unsuccessful, and kept under control by the regional government. In recent years the situation has begun to normalize, with tourism and trade increasing from South America and ANZC. Most people on the smaller islands have come to appreciate there new country, and in any case there appears to be little chance of returning to the status quo of independent countries.

[edit] Territories

The territories controlled by the East Caribbean Federation quickly spread. Within months the federation had absourbed the following territories.

  • Anguilla
  • Antigua and Barbuda
  • Bahamas
  • Barbados
  • Belize
  • Cayman Islands
  • Dominica
  • Jamaica
  • Montserrat
  • Saint Kitts and Nevis
  • Saint Lucia
  • Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
  • Trinidad and Tobago
  • Turks and Caicos Islands
  • US and British Virgin Islands

Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico were much more self-sufficient however, and opted to stay out of the federation. Haiti's economy was extremely week to begin with, and became so dependent on East Caribbean aid that it became little more than a puppet state.

[edit] International relations

The East Carribean Federation is a member of the League of Nations.
