The American Federation is a federal republic covering much of the OTL Four Corners region of the United States. Its main state, Dinetah covers much of the territory that the Navajo tribe inhabited IOTL.

History[]

Pre-Apocalypse Timeline[]

Before the Apocalypse, the area that is now Dinetah was controlled by the United States, and was partially the Navajo Indian Reservation. When the Apocalypse began, Farmington was one of the first towns hit. The US National Guard, however, was stationed there to defend it from Zombies, and they held the town of Farmington for a couple of months. Food supplies and ammunition ran low, however, and a Navajo man named Ahiga Haskie in the National Guard made the controversial decision to relocate to the Four Corners Airport in hopes of finding supplies and possibly taking an airplane to Texas. The planes were beyond repair, and the airport was hopelessly overrun by Zombies. In the now legendary Battle of the Four Corners, 562 National Guardsmen and armed civilians under the command of Haskie destroyed the Horde occupying the airport. Supplies were found, and the survivors gradually drove the Zombies out of Farmington and the surrounding region.

City-State Era[]

From 1969 to 1987, Dinetah was a fairly unimportant city-state in an area filled with unimportant city-states. It was extremely isolationist, only occasionally conducting rudimentary trade and diplomacy with its bigger neighbor, Painted Desert. It was also unique because it did not participate in the New Mexican War, and was largely ignored by Texas and other regional powers until its rise to power, beginning in 1987.

Rise to Power[]

From 1987 to 1993, Dinetah experienced an extremely fast rise to power, from an unknown city-state in New Mexico to a regional power. Many wonder "how did this happen so fast?." It started with the merger of Dinetah and the Painted Desert. In particular, many citizens in Teec Nos Pos identified with the Dinetan government, yet they lived in Painted Desert-held territory. Due to this and the similarity between the two nations, both culturally and economically, they merged. The rise continued with the war against Las Vegas and the Emancipators. Las Vegas has had a Mafia government for years, and the president of Dinetah, Eric Dele was touring the nation, and was headed to California, when he was captured by a gang of Raiders, also known as the Emancipators. Dele was rescued, yet Dinetah discovered that the leader of the Emancipators was the brother of a local Mafia boss in Las Vegas. Tensions rose, and Dinetah declared war on Las Vegas to free its people. The nation was ousted of its Mafia government, and they became a Dinetan protectorate. The Emancipators were later dealt with, with the help of the nations of Northern California and Texas. With the Southwest outlaws gone, Dinetah had a great amount of land to settle. The nation of Utah was later founded, as a Dinetan protectorate, consisting of Deseretians and Dinetans.

Government and Politics[]

Dinetah is an Oligarchic Republic, meaning that it is led by a council. Every seven years, people elect councilmen to serve in the Council. The candidates are chosen based on the services that they did to Dinetah. With the Painted Desert merger, the government was reformed to make it more modern, most notably the addition of a president.

Council Offices and Officers:

  1. President - Phil Nastas (Nationalist)
  2. Commander of the Armed Forces - Franklin Hastin (Navajo Tribal)
  3. Secretary of the Council - Elrod Tsosie (Conservative)
  4. Treasurer of Dinetah - George Nalnish (Navajo Tribal)
  5. Head of Foreign Affairs - Manuel Iglacias (Liberal)
  6. Head of Economy and Industry - Ronald Tse (Navajo Tribal)
  7. Head of Domestic Affairs - Sofia Rook (Liberal)
  8. Head of Agriculture - Henry Beyale (Navajo Tribal)
  9. Head of Law Enforcement - Fredrick Boulanger (Conservative)
  10. Head of Urban Development - Jorge Martinez (Liberal)
  11. Head of Energy Development - Allister Geraldson (Republican)

Political Parties[]

There are several major Dinetan political parties. Many are continuations of pre-war parties, but many others are entirely new entities:

Conservative Party[]

This party has long dominated Dinetan politics. Founded by Haskie, and split from the Republicans, this party has long sought to remain isolationist and traditional. They favor Navajo rights and a strong militia, but no professional military. They also favor, in general, more traditional, status quo policies. Recently this party has slipped in favor of the Nationalist and Liberal parties, but they still remain the majority. In politics, they are in the center of the right wing. Many Conservatives have left the Council, putting the future of the party in jeopardy. Nowadays, with the Painted Desert Merger, this party has lost its former glory and is no longer number one.

Republican Party[]

This party is a direct continuation of the pre-war American party. They tend to favor less government intervention in daily lives, and business being more of an influence on the government. The Republican party is almost always the second largest party, but unlike the Conservatives, the Republicans tend to be rich capitalists, and their numbers have stayed steady, unlike many other parties. In politics, they range from middle-left to center-right.

Liberal Party[]

This party tends to be center-left. They tend to be much less isolationist than most other parties, and are more supporting of Dinetahn nationalism, but they are still rather isolationist. They focus on the growing of Dinetah's population and industry and recently have taken a huge leap forward in popularity. In fact, the ex-Head of Foreign Affairs who supported the anti-isolationism of Dinetah was Liberal, and has influenced the party greatly.

Navajo Tribal[]

This party is the last of the "Old Four," parties that have not risen in recent years. They are center-right to far right, and mostly consists of Navajo tribe members. They support a strong tribe-Dinetah bond, and support the oligarchy of Dinetah. Out of all of the parties, this one has taken the biggest hit in popularity. Since Dinetah merged with Painted Desert, many Navajo Tribal leaders are from Painted Desert.

Nationalist Party[]

Out of all the parties, this is the newest, only recently having been founded. Its founder believes that Dinetah is destined to be a great power, and that we need to support expansion of population and military, and need to develop a strong sense of national identity. This party ranges from center-right in some issues, to far-right in some others.

Socialist Party[]

This party has historically been the smallest. It is very similar to the Liberals, but more socialist. They dislike the Republicans and have gotten into major disputes with them.

Military[]

Dinetah has a militia consisting of 10,000 troops that may or may not all be on duty. In the event of a war or crisis,

they all are mobilized. The regular army consists of 25,000 troops mostly stationed in Fort Gallup.

Culture[]

Literature[]

Dinetah's major contribution to literature is the book: "Dead Not Rising." It details the history of the world from 1968 to 2068 if the Zombies remained a figment of imagination. In the story, the USSR breaks up suddenly, America becomes the sole world power, the rise of capitalism in Asia, the information revolution, deterioration of the environment, oil crisis, and eventually America fragmenting into nation-states. The book, however popular, has come under a lot of criticism, with a critic calling it "as implausible as when Alice stepped through the looking-glass."

Sports[]

The two major sports of Dinetah are baseball and American football (simply called football). In fact, before the apocalypse, Farmington was known as the "Baseball Capital of the World".
