Because of the united Arab state, a wide range of national fates were decided by its worldwide influence.
AbkhaziaThe Republic of Abkhazia, before the 2008 South Ossetia War, was unrecognized by all nations of the world. However, the UAR regularly sold weapons to the Abkhaz Army along with the South Ossetian army to use against Georgia. As the UAR was a close ally of the new capitalist Russia, Georgia was therefore an enemy, or more specifically according to President Saleh, an "Imperialist State".
During the Russian-Georgian War, the UAR personally intervened on the side of the Abkhaz and the South Ossetians. With the combined force of the Arabs and the Russians, the Georgian Army was fully pushed out of the separatist republics. Although Abkhazia remains unrecognized by major powers, it enjoys recognition from many regional powers.
AfghanistanThe Islamic State of Afghanistan owes its continued existence and its relative stability to the UAR and Iran. In 1998, after the Islamic Emirate government executed Iranian workers at their consulate in Mazat-i-Sharif, the Arab government offered to assist Iran in a conflict against the Taliban state.
In December 1998, Arab and Iranian forces invaded Afghanistan. Kabul was liberated in February of 1999, and the Taliban lost power of all seats of political power by July. Burhanuddin Rabbani was reinstalled as President of Afghanistan. The Iranian and Arab armies worked in a joint effort to secure the stability of the country before the next presidential elections in 2000. After the election, the Iranian and Arab armies left the country.
Upon their leaving, the relatively weak Afghan army could not stop the Taliban from reclaiming South Afghanistan. When the United States invaded in 2001 following 9/11, the American military succesfully pushed the Taliban back to Helmand Province. The Taliban still holds Helmand Province, ruling it as the Islamic Emirate of Helmand.
AlgeriaThe Governorate of Algeria is the 10th Governorate of the United Arab Republic.
In 1974, Algerian President Houari Boumediene, a member of the Revolutionary Council was in the midst of a purge of his poltical rivals in an effort to prove he was a capable leader. He was now looked upon as a dictator by most of the world. His advisers warned him that continuing this unrestricted despotism could easily doom Algeria to a reputation of hatred. Suggesting that joining the UAR could save Algeria's image, President Boumediene reluctantly decided to apply. His petition was approved by the Arab National Assembly and by the people of Algeria with 82% in favor. Algeria entered the UAR in October 1974 as the 10th Governorate.
Algeria is significant in the UAR as the center of nuclear proliferation due to the location of the Tamanrasset Nuclear Site, where nuclear weapons are produced. Algeria is also a large natural gas producer.
