The Democratic Party is one of the two major political parties of the United States of America, and on the ideological scale has often been categorized as center-left on economic issues and has developed a far more liberal stance on social issues over the past twenty years, often referred to as the "Great Realignment."
The Democratic Party has often been referred to as the "party of the Congress," due to their dominance of the legislative branch of the United States government since the late 19th century, and the complementary domination by the opposition National Party of the executive branch. Former Democratic Presidential candidate Dennis Hayward once said that "liberals make better legislators," a term coined to represent the essence of the "divided government theory" or the notion of "enforced separation of powers" that is often cited by American political theorists or historians.
